Elm Zigzag Sawfly Is a Potential Threat to Elms

As if Dutch Elm Disease was not enough, there is a potential new threat for the elms still growing in North America. The elm zigzag sawfly, Aproceros leucopoda was first reported in the Western Hemisphere for the first time in Quebec in July 2020. In 2021, only a year later, the sawfly was confirmed in northern Virginia. No other outbreaks have been detected so far. However, this is something to look out for, given this insect’s biology, as well as its discoveries in two widely separated geographic locations.
