This program provides a strong scientific base combined with intensive hands-on exercises. This approach enables maple producers, bulk syrup buyers, state inspectors, and judges to grade maple products with confidence.

Our Flagship Event

The 2026 International Maple Grading School course will be held in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada, this October during the North American Maple Syrup Council’s Annual General Meeting.

  • 11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. | State and Federal Regulations, IMSI Uniform Grading Standards, Chemical Safety, FSMA, Lead Prop 65, and Terroir

Regional Quality Control Workshops

One-day workshops hosted by local organizers across the maple-producing region.

Developed by UMaine Extension and hosted by external organizations throughout the year at various locations around the United States. These hands-on workshops cover the four vital aspects of grading maple syrup. Participants gain experience using a variety of tools for grading color and density, and learn how to avoid common errors with these tools.
