Preparation is key in protecting pets, livestock

Taking proactive steps before a hurricane can greatly increase the chances of safety for pets and livestock, helping residents avoid injury to their animals, Dr. Paul Daniel, veterinarian at Victoria Veterinary Clinic, said.
“If we’re talking about pets, dogs, cats, small reptiles or mammals, probably the best thing is going to be to evacuate, so make plans to take that pet with you and have food and water available,” Daniel said. “Leave if an evacuation order is prepared, but also be prepared if you do stay to be without food, and water and amenities for electricity for several days, so have stuff on hand for your pet.”
