Maple Sugaring 101 is a 6 to 8-week program (depending on the weather) open to Maine youth ages 9 and up who are interested in learning about the maple sugaring process from start to finish. Participants will learn about tree identification, tapping trees, sap collection, using an evaporator, grading and canning syrup, and operating a maple sugaring business.

Each week, participants will learn about the process and connect with other young maple sugarmakers through online meetings and in-person workshops led by Extension and University of Maine experts. The schedule of online meetings are listed below.  On-site workshops will be held at participating sugarhouses following the virtual sessions.
  1. Virtual Session-Unit 1: Woods Work, Thursday, February 13, 5pm-6pm
  2. Virtual Session-Unit 2: Sugarhouse, Thursday, February 27, 5pm-6pm
  3. Virtual Session-Unit 3: Kitchen and Business, Thursday, March 6, 5pm-6pm

This program will also prepare youth for a new Level 1 digital badge called Foundations of Maple Sugaring Enterprise. Youth who complete the program will get free access to the learning modules to earn the digital badge.
