Plant Memorial Home is an assisted living facility founded in 1917 by Thomas Plant. The 23-acre campus sits on the banks of the mighty Kennebec River. Working with the Plant Memorial Home’s head gardener extraordinaire, Rick Kipp, this project provides many opportunities for learning and creativity. In past years, Master Gardener Volunteer Trainees created a series of raised beds for vegetables and learned how to make Hügelkultur beds. There are several ongoing areas of focus:
- The raised bed vegetable garden is the first priority.
- A large therapy garden was started last year and was a big success. Residents loved coming out to sit in the sights, smells, and sounds of this garden. It contains perennials and annuals for culinary use in the kitchen, cutting and attracting pollinators.
- The stone planter on Washington Street containing the PMH signage can be re-planted.
There really is no limit to what can be done on this campus! Mr. Kipp also has a very robust composting set up, secret areas of wild asparagus and plenty of other tips and tricks up his sleeve.
