How do I control Verdolaga (pigweed)?

Question:

My vegetable garden this year was taken over by Verdolaga (pigweed) to a point where I did not enjoy my garden. Is there anything I can do now to help me next year? I don’t mind weeding, but this year was awful, I just couldn’t keep up with this weed.

Answer:

At this point, the best thing you can do is to pull out or cut the stalks of the pigweed. I would approach this task very carefully to minimize spreading the seeds throughout your garden. Pigweed can be a challenging weed to control, but it’s important to address this plant before it goes to seed because it can produce up to 117,000 seeds/plan when it’s mature. Our Home Horticulture Team created this video onManaging Weeds as part of our Victory Garden for ME series. I think you’ll find the techniques mentioned in this video very helpful.
