Updates:
- Extension’s new Accounting and Reporting Professional, Megan Tardiff, is settling in and working out wonderfully. She has been amply welcomed by Extension staff.
- John Rebar and Susan Jennings met recently with Congressman Bruce Poliquin to orient him to Cooperative Extension and UMaine.
4-H Foundation Update: Susan Jennings provided the ELT with an update on her work with the 4-H Foundation. The Foundation’s annual meeting this year has a theme “all about water”. The 4-H Camp and Learning Centers will be featured. Speakers will include John Rebar, President Sue Hunter and Provost Hecker. The Foundation board will honor donors and retiring board members. There will also be named scholarships. The Foundation-sponsored Lunch and Learn on April 6 was well attended. Susan will be exploring new ways to encourage staff to invite her to their client meetings as a development activity. The Foundation is exploring cause marketing, and has been exploring relationships with a variety of organizations. Susan continues work on other grants and appeals including Maine NextGen, Davis Family Foundation, United Way, 21st Century Grant (for Tanglewood), Fields and Ponds, Ham Foundation, Community Foundation, and others. The Foundation has played a key role in the ELLMS bill before the Maine legislature. The bill would fund the ELLMS collaborative $500,000 for each of two years with $100,000/yr dedicated to Bryant Pond and to Tanglewood.
Extension Fleet of Vehicles: The ELT reviewed the current fleet of Extension vehicles and where they are assigned. The ELT discussed relocating one of the Orono-based vehicles to the Falmouth office, where there has been high demand.
Announcements:
Congratulations to the Maine 4-H Camp and Learning Centers on the announcement that ELLMS has been selected as a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 1 Environmental Merit Award Winner. ELLMS (Environmental Living and Learning for Maine Students) is a collaboration including Bryant Pond and Tanglewood 4-H Centers, The Ecology School, Chewonki, and Schoodic Institute at Acadia National Park. Since 2011 the project has allocated over $1 million to support environmental education programming for over 10,000 Maine public school students. The EPA award recognizes outstanding environmental advocates who have made significant contributions toward preserving and protecting our natural resources. ELLMS was nominated by Cathy Elliott who joins Ryder Scott and Heather Francis in representing Extension’s 4-H Centers on the collaborative. Lyndsey Smith and Leah Trommer provide leadership in programming.
