Lafayette and Rawcliffe 4-H Science and Engineering Learning Center

On February 15,  Orono-based 4-H staff moved from the 4-H suite in Libby Hall to 491 College Avenue (formerly Extension’s Pest Management Office). The building has been remodeled to meet the needs of a vibrant state-wide 4-H office and includes a technology-equipped classroom and teaching lab, group workspace, workrooms, offices, and a technology-equipped conference room. The facility was funded with a number of generous gifts and will be known as the Lafayette and Rawcliffe 4-H Science and Engineering Learning Center.  While the building is ready for use by the 4-H program, there is still some work left to do. A grand opening and dedication will be planned for the spring or early summer.

NIFA Report and 2020 POW

UM Extension’s annual report of accomplishments will be submitted to NIFA on Monday, April 1, 2019.  The ELT thanks all staff who reported their 2018 programming and impact statements on the MPRS.  Staff reporting is essential for Extension’s reporting to NIFA, and also is invaluable for our communications with stakeholders.

Congratulations

Congratulations to PI Ellen Mallory who has been awarded $9,362 by The Brewer’s Association (via North Dakota State University) for her “Spring Malting Varieties – E. US”” project.  This is the 4th year of funding for this research.  The funding will support the evaluation of 25 barley varieties in the Eastern Spring Barley Nursery (ESBN) in 2018 in nine states in the Eastern US.  The goal of the research is to determine if varieties developed outside of the region may be adapted for local production.

Congratulations to PI Kristy Ouellette and Co-PI Jen Lobley who have been awarded an additional $6,000 by the Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance (MMSA) for their “Afterschool Coaching for Rural Educators in STEM (ACRES)” project.  This is the 4^th year of funding and will support Kristy’s and Jen’s travel to Billings, Montana to present the results of the ACRES project at the National Extension Conference on Volunteerism.

Announcements

Greenland Point 4-H Camp and Learning Center ribbon-cutting will take place on June 22.
Maine 4-H Foundation’s 2019 Annual Meeting will be held Monday, May 13 in Augusta.
