Machias, Maine — The Senior Companion Program (SCP), sponsored by University of Maine Cooperative Extension, recently celebrated 40 years of national volunteer service. The program has been active in Maine for 35 years.  SCP volunteers in Washington County received scarves embroidered with the SCP and UMaine Extension logos to mark the occasion.

The Senior Companion Program is a volunteer opportunity for those ages 55 and older to visit homebound adults. Volunteers provide companionship and do activities to address loneliness and increase independence. Senior Companions also receive monthly training on issues pertinent to the population they are serving. Currently, 20 Senior Companions visit 87 clients across Washington County. For more information or to volunteer as a Senior Companion, contact Deb Gardner, Program Coordinator, 207.255.3345 or 800.287.1542 (in Maine).
