Beginning beekeeping with UMaine Extension in Calais, Machias

Calais and Machias, Maine — University of Maine Cooperative Extension is offering beginning beekeeping courses in Machias, beginning March 13, and in Calais on March 14. The Machias session will be held Wednesday evenings at University of Maine at Machias, 6-8 p.m., through April 17. The Calais session will be held Thursday evenings at Washington County Community College, 1 College Drive, 6-8 p.m., through April 18.

Class topics include the honeybee colony, hive construction, seasonal management, pests and diseases, and honey production. Participants will visit a local hive for observations and hands-on experience. Master beekeeper Andrew Dewey, and Sue Rowley will teach the course. Class graduates will become members of the Washington County chapter of the Maine State Beekeepers Association.

The $75 per person fee, per couple if willing to share materials, includes “Storey’s Guide To Keeping Honey Bees, 2nd Edition”, by Malcolm T. Stanford and Richard E. Bonney.
