The Washington County Extension Association will hold its annual meeting, featuring the Norman W. Duzen Community Service Award, on Saturday, May 20th beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the county Extension office located at the O’Brien House on the campus of University of Maine Machias.

David Dowley of Roque Bluffs will receive the Norman W. Duzen Community Service Award.   This award is presented annually to an individual who has contributed as a volunteer to the lives of Washington County citizens.  Dowley shares his talents at the Downeast Coastal Conservancy, Roque Bluffs Community Center, and the Machias Area Food Pantry.

The award’s namesake, Norman W. Duzen, was a dedicated civic and religious leader for over fifty years and had a great love for the people of Down East Maine.

Jen Plaut will receive the University of Maine Volunteer Pen Award for her contributions to the 4-H program. Plaut co-leads the Cobscook Current 4-H Club in Edmunds that focuses on public speaking, LEGO robotics, and photography.

This free, public event will feature a cookout beginning at 11:30 a.m. and showcase many programs and services offered by Extension including wild blueberries, Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP), horticulture, 4-H Camp and Learning Center at Greenland Point, tick testing and identification, and volunteer opportunities from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Attendees can tour the new office space in the O’Brien House and pick up free seeds, tick spoons and soil tests while supplies last. Youth will enjoy a goat petting zoo and a 4-H science activity.

The annual meeting and open house is free and open to the public. Participants are asked to register for the cookout on the event webpage by May 11.
