What if the outdoors became part of your everyday classroom?

Through the Telstar Freshman Academy (TFA), ninth-grade students at Telstar High School experience a unique approach to education that combines academic learning, hands-on exploration, and real-world challenges.

A longstanding partnership between Maine School Administrative District 44 (SAD 44) and the University of Maine Cooperative Extension 4-H Camp & Learning Center at Bryant Pond, TFA brings students to our campus throughout the academic year, making outdoor and experiential education an integral part of their freshman experience.

Learning Beyond the Traditional Classroom

For Telstar freshmen, Bryant Pond becomes an extension of their school environment.

Students spend their mornings at Bryant Pond participating in project-based learning before returning to Telstar High School for lunch and other classes. This approach allows students to experience the benefits of hands-on, outdoor education while remaining connected to their traditional school schedule.

Rather than studying subjects in isolation, students explore how science, history, mathematics, language arts, and other disciplines connect to the world around them.

Through multidisciplinary projects and real-world investigations, students develop a deeper understanding of the relationships between people, communities, and the natural environment.

Learning experiences support Maine Learning Results Standards while encouraging communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving.

Learning Through Experience

The Bryant Pond campus and surrounding natural environment provide a setting where students can explore ideas, ask questions, and discover answers through direct experience.

Students investigate social and environmental systems, consider how those systems interact, and explore the roles they play within their communities and the larger world.

Through group projects, outdoor exploration, and collaborative challenges, students are encouraged to take an active role in their learning while developing confidence, independence, and a greater appreciation for the natural world.

Telstar Freshman Academy is built on the ongoing collaboration between Telstar High School educators and Bryant Pond’s outdoor education staff.

Working together, teachers and camp staff develop engaging learning experiences that connect academic instruction with the unique resources and opportunities available at Bryant Pond.

This partnership provides students with opportunities to strengthen relationships, discover personal interests, build new skills, and develop a greater sense of responsibility for themselves, their communities, and the environment.
