Imagine a classroom without walls, where students explore forest ecosystems, investigate life beneath the water’s surface, navigate woodland trails, and discover what they can accomplish by working together.
At the University of Maine 4-H Camp & Learning Center at Bryant Pond, learning comes to life through hands-on outdoor experiences that spark curiosity, build confidence, and connect students with the natural world.
Since 1956, Bryant Pond, formerly the Maine Conservation School, has welcomed thousands of students, teachers, and groups to explore, discover, and learn in the outdoors.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Lakeside Classroom brings education outdoors through a unique combination of experiential science, conservation education, outdoor skills, and team-building activities.
Our programs are designed to complement classroom learning while giving students opportunities to ask questions, make discoveries, solve problems, and experience the natural world firsthand.
Working in small study groups of approximately 8–12 students, participants learn alongside experienced field teachers who encourage exploration, cooperation, and discovery.
Every school is different, and so is every Lakeside Classroom experience. We work with educators to develop programs that support their curricular goals, with learning opportunities connected to the Next Generation Science Standards.
Whether your students are visiting for environmental education, outdoor adventure, or a combination of experiences, our goal is to create meaningful learning opportunities that extend well beyond their time at camp.
A Lakeside Classroom Experience That Fits Your School
Whether you’re planning a single day of outdoor learning or a multi-day experience, Lakeside Classroom offers flexible programming designed around your school’s goals.
Many of our school groups join us for a three-day, two-night experience, giving students time to explore, build friendships, develop new skills, and become more comfortable learning in the outdoors. These residential experiences also create opportunities for students to share meals, participate in evening activities, and strengthen connections with classmates and teachers outside the traditional classroom setting.
We also welcome schools for single-day visits, overnight stays, and longer programs. Our team works with educators to create a schedule that brings together environmental education, outdoor adventure, and team-building activities in a way that best supports their students.

Some of the most meaningful learning happens when students work together toward a common goal.
Through cooperative challenges, group initiatives, and outdoor activities, students develop communication, problem-solving, leadership, and teamwork skills. From navigating the low ropes course to working together on outdoor challenges, participants discover the value of supporting one another and celebrating shared accomplishments.
Conservation Education & Outdoor Skills
Building Confidence Through Outdoor Adventure
Outdoor experiences offer students opportunities to develop new skills, discover personal strengths, and build a lasting connection with nature.
Depending on the goals of the group, activities may include canoeing, kayaking, hiking, navigation, fishing, archery, and high ropes challenges. Each experience emphasizes hands-on participation, skill development, and an appreciation for Maine’s outdoor traditions.

Forest Ecology
Discover the Forest from the Ground Up
The forests surrounding Bryant Pond become living laboratories where students explore the relationships between plants, animals, soil, and the environment.
Through observation and investigation, students may identify trees, examine decomposing logs, explore forest habitats, and discover the roles of producers, consumers, and decomposers.
These experiences encourage students to look more closely at the natural world and better understand the interconnected systems that sustain it.
Water Ecology
Explore the Living World Beneath the Surface
Lake Christopher, nearby streams, ponds, and vernal pools offer opportunities for hands-on scientific discovery.
Students investigate aquatic habitats, examine the organisms living within them, and explore how living and nonliving factors influence freshwater ecosystems.
From collecting and identifying aquatic invertebrates to observing changes in water environments, students experience science through direct exploration and discovery.
Sensory Awareness & Nature Exploration

The natural world is full of things to discover when we take the time to notice them.
Through sensory activities, wildlife tracking, outdoor games, woodland exploration, and other nature-based experiences, students learn to observe their surroundings in new ways.
These activities encourage curiosity, awareness, and a deeper appreciation for the complexity and beauty of the natural world.
