August 18: 4-H Exhibit Hall Cleanup and Leader’s Association Meeting at the Cumberland Fairgrounds at 5:00PM

4-H Exhibit Hall Cleanup, Pizza Party, and Leader’s Association Meeting at the Cumberland Fairgrounds on Thursday, August 18, at 5:00PM

The Cumberland County 4-H Leaders Association is having their annual clean up of the 4-H Exhibit Hall at the Cumberland Fairgrounds on August 18, at 5:00 – 6:30PM for 4-H’ers, leaders, parents, grandparents, and friends, at the fairgrounds. Pizza will be provided from 6:30 – 7:00 PM. for all those who come and help. Please bring your own drink. Masks are now no longer required and may be worn according to personal preference. The hall always needs a good cleaning before the fair, especially with a year off!
We can always use someone to bring an iron, ironing board, hedge trimmers, & rakes.

After cleaning the grounds and having some pizza, leaders are invited to stay and join the Leaders Association at their August Leaders meeting to get ready for the fair. We look forward to seeing you there!

4-H Participation in Cumberland Fair Parade

There’s celebration in store for this years Cumberland Fair! The Cumberland Farmers club would love for 4-Hers to join them in the annual parade on the first day of the fair, Sunday, September 25th. They are hoping for a some floats to be made either for 4-H as a whole and/or for specific clubs. If you or your club is interested in participating in this tradition, please let Eavan Sibole, eavan.sibolelittle@maine.edu, know. More information to follow.

2022 Pig Raffle Tickets Available Now

The Pig Raffle is one of the most interesting fundraisers that Cumberland County 4-H does each year. The Pig Raffle raises funds to support 4-H scholarships, trips, and other awards for 4-Her’s in our county. If you would like to purchase or sell these tickets to start raising money before the Cumberland Fair starts, please contact our office, 207-781-6099 to have some mailed to you, or arrange to pick some up! Tickets may also be picked up by contacting Jenn Grant, at findviewfarm@juno.com or 207-318-9166. Volunteers Needed: 4-H Kitchen Fundraiser and Pig Raffle Ticket Sales at the Cumberland Fair, September 25- October 1, 2022

The 4-H Kitchen and Pig Raffle Booth is looking for volunteers for the week of the Cumberland Fair to prepare and serve foods as well as sell pig raffle tickets. This is the primary fundraiser held by the Cumberland County 4-H Leader’s Association to support all of the scholarships, camperships, County events, and programs. All Covid-19 precautionary guidelines from the state of Maine for food booths will be followed and conveyed to volunteers for their shifts.

Shift times:

  • 6:30 – 8:30-9 a.m.
  • 8:30 – 11:30 a.m.
  • 11:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
  • 4:30 – 9:00 p.m.

Cumberland Fair, September 25 – October 1, 2022

All 2022 Cumberland Fair 4-H information is available on the Cumberland Fair 4-H Information page. Please be sure to look over the page carefully for important information. Livestock entry forms will be due to Mark Cooper by September 1st. Here are some helpful suggestions for you while you are getting ready for the fair:

  1. Club Exhibits: Be sure to bring everything for your display, including a table no larger than 4 ft. by 4 ft., if it will be needed!
  2. Projects: Pay close attention to the details on your projects and allow time to complete them and not leave things to the last minute.
  3. Exhibit Forms: Be sure to get your Cumberland Fair Exhibit Hall Entry form (Google Form) filled out early so we can make sure we have room in the hall for your exhibits and enough judges. Please also make sure each project you enter has an Exhibit Form AND Skills Card OR the new double-sided Exhibit Form/Skills Card filled out completely and attached. The Life Skills Wheel side of the skills form DOES NOT need to be filled out.
  4. Project Drop Off: Make sure to note the new drop off times for all projects. Some projects will be judged on Friday and some on Saturday in order to space out people in the Exhibit Hall and make set-up of the hall easier.
  5. Fair Passes: Same as 2019. Your 4-H member cards will NOT work as gate passes. Livestock members and families showing at the fair will receive fair passes from Mark Cooper, Livestock Superintendent. Those exhibiting in the 4-H Exhibit Hall who are 13 and older must see Sara Conant during project drop off in the 4-H Exhibit Hall if you need passes, or arrange a time to pick them up from the 4-H office prior to the start of the fair.

Save the Date Annual Meeting, Wednesday, September 7, at 5:00PM.

4-H leaders and members are invited to the 2022 Annual Meeting of the Cumberland County Extension Association to be held on Wednesday, September 7 starting at 5:00PM at the UMaine Gardens at Tidewater Farm in Falmouth. Appetizers will be provided.

For dessert we will enjoy the delicious results of the annual Pie Bake-Off ! Do you have a favorite pie recipe?  We invite you to enter the bake-off sponsored by King Arthur Flour and share your scrumptious dessert! Looking for 4-H Alumni & Members Attending UMaine!

If you are a current or former 4-H member planning to attend UMaine this fall, know of a 4-H member currently attending UMaine, or know of a recent 4-H alumni attending UMaine, read this! Collegiate 4-H is an opportunity for 4-H alumni and college students interested in supporting the mission of 4-H to be involved in 4-H after high school. We are currently exploring starting a Collegiate 4-H Club at UMaine with an anticipated start date for the 2022 fall semester. Simply fill out this short form to let us know if you think you might be interested!

Save the Date for the 4-H Unconference

UMaine 4-H Unconference will be an organized forum for 4-H volunteers, club leaders, after school providers, teachers, parents and teen leaders to gather. UMaine 4-H Unconference is intentionally designed to have YOU teach and learn from each other. There is no agenda; you come with 4-H ideas and topics you want to talk about or learn more about, and we’ll guide the process to get folks into groups where YOU are the experts.  Save the dates: Saturday, October 22nd and Friday, November 11th.  Come to one or both. Watch this website for more information as it becomes available.

2022 Topsham Fair Summer Horse Show

Join us on August 7, 2022 for the Topsham Fair Summer Horse Show! Registration deadline is August 4, 2022 at 4:00 p.m. Warm up starts at 7:00 a.m. and the show starts at 8:15 a.m. Premiums will be paid. There are open events that anyone can register for. Register online.

Maine 4-H Survey Request

EFNEP Recipe of the Month: Flavored Water

After the long cold winters here in Maine, the summer sun is a welcome sight and feeling. Many of us are out enjoying the beaches, lakes, mountains, and sports camps. With the hot weather comes the need to stay hydrated, and drinking plenty of fluids is important all year long, but so much more so in the heat. General guidelines state that it is important to drink eight glasses of water a day, as this will keep the average person doing average activity adequately hydrated throughout the day. Remember, if it is hot or if you are staying active, you may need to drink more water throughout the day. Here is a great recipe for Flavored Water that is very refreshing and enjoyable on hot summer days.
