What is the correct soil composition for a raised bed vegetables garden?

Question:

I want to plant raised bed for vegetables. Is there a correct soil composition or soil test kit you would recommend?

Answer:

Abi Griffith, Horticulture Community Education Assistant

Generally we recommend 75% loam (the mineral component of soil) and about 25% organic matter (finished compost) mixed together well. Depending on how much you need, you can also buy bags of soil that already has compost or other organic matter mixed in (check the label or ask at the nursery). If you want to test your own soil or any soil that you are bringing in or may be using, you can go to the Analytical Lab and Maine Soil Testing Service to request that a soil test box and form be sent to you. This part of our website also has information about the soil testing as well as how to take a sample.

Our fact sheet, Gardening in Small Spaces, has some more information on raised bed gardens that may be helpful as well.
