Aroostook, Hancock, Washington: 

David Lowe is a Sustainable Agriculture and Horticulture Professional based in Aroostook County in the Presque Isle office. David is the Master Gardener Volunteer Coordinator for Aroostook, Hancock, and Washington counties and will be answering client questions about home horticulture in all three counties.

Kate Garland is a Horticulturist based in the Penobscot County office in Bangor. Kate is the Master Gardener Volunteer Coordinator for Franklin, Penobscot, Piscataquis, and Somerset counties, and will be answering client questions about home horticulture in all four counties. Kate helps gardeners improve efficiency and build horticultural skills through a number of educational avenues including workshops, newsletters, social media posts, and one-on-one support. Additionally, Kate works with school and community gardens to develop plans that will build sustainability and improve community impact. Kate’s work also involves supporting and coordinating a team of Maine Harvest for Hunger volunteers who are growing, gleaning and distributing thousands of pounds of food annually to shelters, pantries, and individuals struggling with food insecurity in and around Penobscot County. Kate is active at Rogers Farm Forage and Crop Research Facility in Stillwater, which is used for a wide range of sustainable agriculture research, extension, and teaching projects.

Androscoggin-Sagadahoc, Kennebec

Lynne Holland is a Horticulture Professional based in the Androscoggin and Sagadahoc Counties office located in Lisbon. Lynne is the Master Gardener Volunteer Coordinator for Androscoggin-Sagadahoc counties and Kennebec county, and will be answering client questions about home horticulture in all three counties.

She is also part of the Maine Harvest for Hunger Team and co-chairs the Pollinator Friendly-Garden Project, a collaboration with UNH to certify gardens in both states that model pollinator-friendly biodiversity in the garden.

Knox-Lincoln, Waldo

Viña Lindley is a Horticulture Professional based in the Waldo County office located in Waldo. Viña is the Master Gardener Volunteer Coordinator for Waldo and Knox-Lincoln counties, and will be answering client questions about home horticulture in all three counties. She is based in Waldo county and implements programs that address critical issues in food access and sustainable approaches to home horticulture. From designing educational workshops to collaborating with community organizations, Viña’s focus is on empowering individuals, families, and institutions to enhance their understanding of sustainable practices grounded in research-based information. Viña helps support Master Gardener Volunteers in their efforts to expand food access, deepen knowledge, and support a healthy environment in the community. On the state level she works to expand access to local foods in institutional settings, including through the Maine Farm and Sea to School Network and in collaboration with the Maine Department of Corrections. Closer to home, Viña supports efforts to expand access to locally-sourced, nutritious foods through her collaborations with Waldo County Bounty.

Pamela Hargest is a Horticulture Professional based in the Cumberland County office located in Falmouth, where she provides technical assistance to home, school, and community gardeners. Serving as the Master Gardener Volunteer Coordinator in Cumberland County, Pamela collaborates with volunteers and community partners to develop educational programs that focus on sustainable horticulture practices grounded in research-based information. In addition, Pamela manages the UMaine Gardens at Tidewater Farm, a public garden and educational site located in Falmouth. She’s also part of the Maine Harvest for Hunger Team and serves as co-chair of the statewide Home Horticulture Team.

Statewide Horticulture Outreach

Jonathan Foster is a statewide horticulture outreach professional, answering home horticulture questions and providing guidance through the online “Ask the Expert” portal and our county offices about horticulture, gardening, lawn, plant pest and disease, and landscape issues. This work involves not only translating evidence-based research into practical advice for our clients, but also encouraging sustainable gardening practices and promoting the cultivation of native plants to preserve the traditional Maine landscape, one of our most important natural resources. Jonathan was previously involved with training Penobscot County Master Gardener Volunteers and managing the Rogers Farm Master Gardener Volunteer Demonstration Garden.
