Pumpkin Variety Testing at Highmoor Farm
Highmoor Farm is UMaine College of Natural Sciences, Forestry, and Agriculture’s fruit and vegetable research facility in Monmouth. Our goal is to conduct applied research for the fruit and vegetable farmers of Maine and provide educational resources for Maine agriculture to remain competitive.
At Highmoor Farm researchers routinely evaluate apple, berry, and vegetable varieties for important horticultural traits and for disease resistance. Some of the better pumpkin varieties are shown here.

20–25 lb. fruit, round to slightly elongated shape with nice ribbing, medium to dark orange color, and fairly long stems. Vigorous plant, but susceptible to powdery mildew. |

6–7 lb. fruit, slightly flattened shape, moderate ribbing, deep orange coloring, good flesh for pies and canning. |
Magic Lantern |
16–22 lb. fruit, round to slightly flattened shape with nice ribbing, deep orange color, and strong stems. Semi-bush plants are powdery mildew tolerant. |
Mystic Plus |
3–8 lb. fruit, round to slightly flattened shape with moderate ribbing, deep orange color, hard rind, and long, strong stems. Plants are compact and have powdery mildew tolerance. |
Gladiator |
20-25 lb. fruit, round, slightly flattened shape with ribbing, dark orange color, and large, strong stems. Vigorous semi-vine, powdery mildew tolerant. |
Field Trip |
3–8 lb. fruit, flattened shape, uniform with good ribbing, deep orange color, and very long stems. Plants are high yielding and tolerant to powdery mildew. |
Racer Plus PMR |
14-18 lb. average, round to flattened shape with good ribbing, dark color, and long, strong stems. Intermediate powdery mildew tolerant plants have good yields and are compact. |
Kandy Korn |
3/4–1 lb. fruit, bright orange, smooth with good handles, very uniform, has good pumpkin shape. Restrictive vines good for high-density plantings. |
Casperita |
8-16 oz. White fruit that holds color well. Deep rips with attractive green stems. Can be used as table decoration or cooked like an Acorn squash. Intermediate powdery mildew tolerant semi-bush vines. |
Wee-B-Little |
6–18 oz. fruit, mini, round pumpkins with smooth rind, good color, and short stems. Plants are compact and high yielding. |
