The spring of 2020 saw a tremendous increase in the number of feeder pigs coming into Maine. Many new pig growers decided to raise a few pigs to fill their freezer in the fall. UMaine Extension is sponsoring a Raising Backyard Pigs Zoom program on Tuesday, June 16, from noon until 2 pm. Please register for this free program to receive the Zoom link and phone numbers to call into the program.

Prospective and beginning small-scale pork producers will gain a general understanding of what it takes to raise pigs in their backyard. This program will be led by Donna Coffin, UMaine Extension Professor, and Dr. Colt Knight, UMaine Extension Livestock Specialist.

Topics will include:

  • swine breeds
  • housing
  • health
  • nutrition
  • daily care
  • expected meat yield

This program is sponsored by the University of Maine Cooperative Extension.

For more information or to request an accommodation, please contact Donna Coffin at donna.coffin@maine.edu or 207.262.7726 (to leave a voicemail message) to discuss your needs. Receiving requests for accommodations at least 5 days before the program provides a reasonable amount of time to meet the request, however all requests will be considered.
