Speak Up, Maine 4-h! Public Speaking 2025.
Everyone knows public speaking is one of a person’s most important skills, and almost everyone is afraid of doing it! Maine 4-H has a solid history of preparing youth to speak confidently to a crowd and even pivoted to virtual presentations when we could not gather in person. This year, there is 4-H staff in every county in Maine, and we’re all encouraging our 4-H’ers to participate in Public Speaking. Piscataquis County 4-H will host a Public Speaking Showcase on March 15 at Central Hall Commons; all enrolled 4-H’ers are invited to present. Youth may register as soon as they have a title for their presentation (must be logged in to ZSuite to go to the registration page). Share your spark with your community!
If you’re self-motivated, you can find almost everything you need to know about 4-H Public Speaking on the Maine 4-H Public Speaking website. Megan and Leah are leading a virtual workshop on February 4, for those who would like a refresher. Sign up on ZSuite (must be logged into ZSuite to go to the registration page).
As with most things, public speaking takes preparation and practice, and that’s why we created The Macaws 4-H Public Speaking Club! We meet on Tuesday afternoons from 3:30-5:00 pm at Thompson Free Library in Dover-Foxcroft (contact Trisha Smith at email trisha.smith1@maine.edu for schedule). Most of our members plan to present at the Showcase in March, but that is not required in order to participate in the club.
Cloverbuds (age 5-8), as well as older youth, may present at the Speak Up Showcase on March 15. They will receive feedback, but no numerical scores. Older youth will receive both feedback and numerical scores. Their scores may qualify them for the State Speak Up Showcase on April 5 in Orono. Last year, 3 Piscataquis County youth qualified for the State Showcase, and they all won ribbons. We’re looking forward to a great season, and hope to see lots of our friends, families, and neighbors at the Speak Up Showcase on March 15!
Dominoes with Jewel

Jewel is a young woman in our community with a passion for making Domino Mazes! She has a YouTube channel where she shares her creations. She has also been sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm at Thompson Free Library on the third Wednesday of the month at Ms. Michelle’s Homeschool Drop-In. During February vacation, on Wednesday, February 19, kids will have 2 chances to build domino mazes with Jewel: from 9:30-10:30 am at the Jim Robinson Field House, and at the library from 1:00-2:30 pm. Come check it out!

Maine 4-H Ag Ambassadors – Spring 2025
Maine 4-H is now accepting registrations for the spring 2025 Agriculture Ambassadors cohort! The program is designed for youth ages 14-18 who are interested in any aspect of agriculture. Youth spend time getting to know each other and learn both online and in-person in sessions facilitated by UMaine 4-H Staff and community partners. Sessions will focus on career exploration, exploring the Maine Food System with farm and production visits around the state, and building relationships with industry professionals.
This season we will visit local Maine Ag businesses like Mook Sea Farm and Aquaculture and the anaerobic digester at Stonyvale Farm (one of the largest in the US!). Check them both out! Transportation assistance for these events may be available upon request.
In addition to the multi-week session, youth will serve in their ambassador role with Maine 4-H for at least 1 year. Youth will pick an agricultural area to focus on (ex. livestock, ag literacy/food systems, environmental stewardship, ag and health) during their term and explore leadership opportunities locally, statewide, and even nationally. Register today!
