Nutrient Management in Deep Compost Mulch Systems

More and more farmers are adopting the deep compost mulch no-till system. This system has many benefits including eliminating tillage, reducing weed populations, and increasing resilience to water extremes. However there is little known about optimizing nutrient management in this system. Join this discussion with Bruce Hoskins (UMaine Soil Testing Service Assistant Scientist), Nick Rowley (UMaine Sustainable Ag Professional), Caleb Goosen (MOFGA Crop Specialist), Jason Lilley (Sustainable Ag Educator), and experienced farmers. We’ll discuss nutrient issues observed on farms, research based experiences, and best practices for testing soils, fertilizing, and addressing nutrient deficiencies in this system.

Please note: while a Zoom option is available, all speakers will be in-person.

Soil Steaming: Grower Discussion Session

Come learn about the potential of soil steaming as a weed management tool. This practice is being used by farmers in high tunnels and localized zones of field production. This discussion session will highlight the experiences of a farmer cooperative who have been sharing a steamer unit as part of a Specialty Crop Block Grant. In this discussion session we will discuss the pros and cons of steaming, the process of steaming soils, and how other growers can access the steamer for use on your farm.

Cover Cropping for Nutrient Management

Fertilizer is expensive. In this webinar we’ll discuss how cover crops can play a central role in preventing nutrients from leaving your soils, providing nitrogen, and influencing when soil nutrients are available to your crops. UMaine Extension Sustainable Agriculture Educator, and Northeast Cover Crop Council board member Jason Lilley will lead this virtual session.
