  • 1 ½ cups warm water
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 3 cups white flour
  • 1 cup whole grain flour
  • oil (canola, olive, or vegetable)
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • coarse salt (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 425°F.
  • Clean the kitchen area and wash hands with soap and water.
  • In a mixing bowl, add yeast to warm water.
  • Mix salt, sugar, white flour, and whole wheat flour into yeast and water until dough is formed.
  • Roll dough into a circle.
  • Cut dough into 12 portions with pizza cutter or sharp knife.
  • Shape each portion into desired pretzel shape. If children are helping you prepare the pretzels, give each child a ball of dough to roll and twist into any shape. Alphabet letter shapes are fun to make.
  • Lay pretzel dough on lightly greased cookie sheet.
  • Brush or spoon beaten egg on pretzels.
  • Clean the kitchen area and wash hands with soap and water after touching raw eggs.
  • Sprinkle with coarse salt, if desired.
  • Bake at 425°F for 12 to 15 minutes.

Storage

  • Store leftovers at room temperature in an airtight container and use within 4 days. If you don't plan to consume them immediately, freeze in a freezer-grade container or bag and use within 3 to 4 months for the best quality.
