Spotted Wing Drosophila Alert and Berry Notes — September 21, 2023

Spotted wing drosophila trap counts were higher in nearly all locations this week, most notably in a field where spraying had been stopped. Although these numbers are relatively low for this point in the season, they do represent a significant threat to the remaining fall berry crop if left unmanaged. With no very cold weather predicted for the near term, it is likely that populations will continue to rise as long as food is available. Frequent, regular harvests to prevent the accumulation of overripe fruit in the field can reduce the buildup of drosophila populations.

A 5-7 day spray schedule is recommended to minimize fruit infestation in fields.
