Anne Lichtenwalner, DVM, Ph.D., Extension veterinarian, associate professor and director of the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, and students.

This session consists of 4 mini-presentations by graduate and undergraduate students working in the UMaine Extension veterinary diagnostic lab with Dr. Lichtenwalner during 2020-2022. Topics are associated with animal health and risk management, and all relate to ongoing projects at the University of Maine.

  • Rachel White will share information about snails on pastures, and the risks and benefits of using pasture management tools to mitigate those risks.
  • In a related study, Denise Cole will talk about her study of risk factors for, and farmer awareness of microplastics on farms.
  • Kianna Dean will discuss her investigation of swine health risk factors, including parasite risks; her follow-up study will continue this spring.
  • Morgan Belvin will share findings from year 1 of her 2-year Honors capstone study of risk factors for Staphylococcus aureus mastitis in Maine dairy herds (due to illness, her talk is narrated by Dr. Lichtenwalner).

Each talk has some practical take-aways for the farming community, and those interested in One Health/public health issues in Maine.

University of Maine Cooperative Extension 2021 Pastured Turkey Study

This video covers a recent turkey pasture study completed at the University of Maine. The study was 16 weeks long and the main goal of the study was to test a new type of housing structure for pastured turkey raising.
