Diabetes Program Planned for Indian Township
Machias, Maine — In 2014, fifty-five people participated in Dining with Diabetes Down East, a free four-week series that was presented by University of Maine Cooperative Extension in Calais, Machias, Eastport and Lubec. UMaine Extension will offer the next series at Indian Township Elder Meal Site, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Wednesdays, April 29, May 6, May 13 and May 20.
The community-based program complements medical care by teaching people with type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, their family members and caregivers what they can do to help control blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol. During each of the sessions, UMaine Extension registered dietitian and nutritionist Alan Majka gives presentations, leads discussions and demonstrates preparation of nutritious recipes that participants sample. All of those who have participated indicated the information was easy to understand and the food tasted very good.
Support for this program includes donations of food and supplies from Hannaford Supermarkets .
