Farming for a Living Down East (So, You Want to Farm in Maine?)

So, You Want to Farm in Maine

A short course for individuals who want a profitable Farm operation.

Dates: 4 afternoons, November 5, 8, 13, and 15, 2018.
Time: 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Location: UMaine Extension Washington County, 28 Center St., Machias, ME
Cost: $50 per person (includes 4 afternoon classes and textbook Starting Your Own Farm Business by Sarah Beth Aubrey)

This multi-session course is designed for any farmer or beginning farmer who wants to start a profitable land-based business or expand a farm hobby into a profitable business. Participants will learn how to make your own enterprise budgets, improve your record keeping, hear from local agencies that have programs specific to farms, and more.

Objectives:

  • ­Participants will feel comfortable starting a land-based business.
  • ­Participants will understand the need for and have a framework for a business plan.
  • ­Participants will select and use a record keeping system.
  • ­Participants will understand how to use Cooperative Extension and other agencies as a resource for their land-based business.
  • ­Participants will understand the importance of and basics of marketing their products, including customer surveys.

Organized by Lily Calderwood, UMaine Wild Blueberry Specialist and Assistant Professor of Horticulture, and Marjorie Peronto, Extension Educator, UMaine Extension, with 12 guest speakers.

This course is approved for Farm Service Agency (FSA) Borrower Training**.
