Campus Stewardship

Caring for Bryant Pond’s Past, Present, and Future

Bryant Pond has a long history of connecting young people with Maine’s outdoors. Since its beginnings as the Maine Conservation School, the campus has grown and changed, but its purpose has remained much the same: providing opportunities to learn, explore, and develop an appreciation for the natural world.

Keeping Bryant Pond strong requires ongoing care of its buildings, grounds, and natural resources, along with planning for the needs of the programs and people who use the campus today.

A Shared Responsibility

The Bryant Pond Learning Center and the University of Maine 4-H Camp & Learning Center at Bryant Pond work together to care for the property and support its continued use for outdoor education.

The Bryant Pond Learning Center is responsible for the long-term stewardship of the property, including ownership, preservation, fundraising, and planning for future improvements. Its work helps protect the campus and ensures that decisions about its future reflect the history and purpose of Bryant Pond.

The University of Maine 4-H Camp & Learning Center manages the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the campus while providing the educational programs that take place here. These include summer camps, school programs, outdoor skills training, and other learning opportunities throughout the year.

While each organization has its own responsibilities, both work toward the same goal: maintaining Bryant Pond as a place where people can learn, explore, and enjoy the outdoors.

Looking Ahead

Caring for Bryant Pond means balancing the needs of today with plans for the years ahead. Many of our buildings have served generations of campers and students, and maintaining them requires ongoing investment. At the same time, we recognize the need to improve facilities and create spaces that better support the educational programs offered here.

The Bryant Pond Learning Center and the University of Maine work together to identify priorities, preserve the character of the campus, and plan improvements that will serve both current and future programs.

Lillian Rogers Waterhouse’s vision helped establish Bryant Pond as a place where young people could learn about conservation and develop a connection to the outdoors. That purpose continues to guide our work today.

As we plan for the future, our commitment is to honor what makes Bryant Pond special while making the improvements needed to keep it a welcoming and valuable place for outdoor education.
