Camp sessions offering Sailing Instruction
Blueberry Cove offers sailing instruction in two-week sessions as part of our day and overnight camp programs to accommodate the needs of just about every camper who wants to learn to sail! Our sailing programs combine learning sailing skills with a traditional summer camp experience. The best of both worlds!
Sailing instruction is provided by the St. George Community Sailing Foundation, which teaches sailing, seamanship, and water safety to children and adults on Maine’s Saint George peninsula. The program also encourages respect for our water environment and honors Maine’s nautical history.
Led by experienced instructors, many certified by the US Sailing Association, campers are given the opportunity to learn about:
- Parts of a sailboat
- Wind awareness
- How sails work
- Rigging the boat
- Sailing upwind and downwind
- Capsize and overboard recovery
- Leaving and returning to a dock or mooring
- Weather, tides, and currents
- Knots and lines
- Ecology of St. George harbors
- History of St. George sailing
And above all, have plenty of FUN!
Sailing is an additional focus for campers who attend one of our two-week sessions of camp and the rest of the day is spent doing regular overnight camp activities. Campers attending weeks 3 & 4 and weeks 7 & 8 stay over the weekend and do special weekend trips. [Note: The Blueberry Cove overnight program ends on Thursday but the sailing program does still happen on Friday if campers want to attend on their own.]
