4-H Programs

2018 Summer of Science

Maine 4-H would like to help make STEM opportunities (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) possible in your community.

What is 4-H Summer of Science? It is a series of weekly STEM activities for kids in grades 3-5 and 6 and 7.

Lessons are delivered once a week, for six weeks.

4-H volunteers, Extension Staff, and caring adults will conduct the activity with groups of five-ten kids. To offer this new program we need a team of one (1) certified and enrolled 4-H Volunteer, one (1) Extension Staff person to facilitate lessons with one (1) community adult as an on-site assistant leader. We will also need a commitment of five youth who will participate in your community. The space and participants are provided by your afterschool/school or group. If your group has a team commitment and you are interested in being a host site, please contact your county UMaine Extension office. Supplies are provided by UMaine 4-H.

Citizen Science Opportunities

Citizen Science Opportunities promote science learning through participation in gathering data, making observations and contributions to real-world research. Citizen science projects encourage youth and volunteers to gather specific types of data and report the data to scientists.  Introductory training is typically provided so no prior experience is needed.  Participation contributes to education and science literacy for the public and allows scientists access to unique data collection. To offer this program we need a team of one (1) certified and enrolled 4-H Volunteer or Extension Staff person to facilitate lessons with one community adult as an on-site assistant leader. We will also need a commitment of five youth who will participate in your community. If your group has a team commitment and you are interested in being a host site, please contact your county UMaine Extension office.
