Pasture Walks Summer 2018

Gretchen Huettner and her family are working to improve their pastures with a diversity of animals and crops. Learn about their attempts to bring back old pastures into better production! (Optional potluck supper after walk)

 

Pasture Walk at Wolfe’s Neck Center for Agriculture and the Environment, Burnett Rd, Freeport, ME
Wednesday, July 25th from 5 – 7 pm

 

Wolfe’s Neck Center and the Maine Grass Farmers Network are hosting a pasture walk at the farm on Burnett Rd in Freeport on Wednesday, July 25 at 5:00 pm.

Wolfe’s Neck Center for Agriculture and the Environment is home to a 40-cow organic dairy farm that ships milk to Stonyfield Organic Yogurt in Londonderry, NH. The farm is also a host farm the Dairy Grazing Apprenticeship (DGA) Program https://www.dga-national.org/

DGA is the first Department of Labor certified apprentice program in agriculture. Wolfe’s Neck now hosts 4 apprentices.

The farm rotationally grazes the dairy herd, providing new allocations of pasture every 12 hours to maximize both forage quality for the cows and production potential of the perennial forages.

Fred custom grazes heifers on the land that used to be an organic dairy farm. Learn some of Fred’s tried and true no-nonsense methods for pasture management.

 

Peggy Rockefeller Farms (PRFs) College of the Atlantic 538 Norway Drive, Bar Harbor, ME
Wednesday, August 8th from 4-6 pm

C.J. Walke is the farm manager at the College of the Atlantic farm in Bar Harbor. The farm has a diverse mix of livestock. Learn about how CJ manages the fields and livestock at the beautiful Peggy Rockefeller Farms.

 

David Greeley, 291 Hatch Rd, Jackson, ME
Sunday, September 9th from 4-6 pm

David has been grazing beef cows on the farm in Jackson for many years. Learn about his cow and fertility management on the beautiful farm in Jackson
