ADA Compliance Checklist for Web Pages

All University of Maine Cooperative Extension web pages must be accessible and comply with Section 508 Standards. Accessibility allows our information to be available to all users. The University (and the law!) requires that all University of Maine websites be accessible.

Use this checklist to help ensure that your web pages are accessible.

If there are images on your web page:

Did you provide “alternative language tag” (ALT) descriptions for all photos and graphics (including logos)?

___ Yes     ___ No/Don’t Know

If you responded with No/Don’t Know, go to “How to add alternative descriptions to photos and graphics.”

If you are planning to upload a PDF to your web page:

Is the PDF accessible?

___ Yes     ___ No/Don’t Know

If you responded with No/Don’t Know, go to “How to check if a PDF is accessible and what to do if it’s not.”

If you have a table on your web page:

Is your table accessible?

___ Yes     ___ No/Don’t Know

If you responded with No/Don’t Know, go to “How to Make ADA Compliant Tables in WordPress.”

If you want to embed or link to a video/audio clip on your web page:

If you would like to have video or audio clips posted on our external website you must work with the Extension Communications and Marketing Team throughout the process to ensure that proper branding, time/quality, and accessibility guidelines are met.

Use a free Web Accessibility Checker to verify that your web page is accessible.

The steps above will take care of the majority of web accessibility issues, however, to ensure that your page complies with Section 508 Standards, check it with a fee web accessibility checker. A number of free, easy-to-use accessibility checkers are available for download.

This checklist does not cover all aspects of web accessibility. If you have questions about web accessibility, please contact Michelle Snowden at michelle.snowden@maine.edu.

Thank you for helping to make UMaine Extension web pages ADA compliant and accessible to everyone!
