4-H Year-End Celebration 2021
Thanks to all who attended the 2021 Knox-Lincoln 4-H Year-End Celebration on November 6 at Blueberry Cove 4-H Camp & Learning Center. We were treated to a tour of the grounds at Blueberry Cove by Ryan LeShane, 4-H Professional in Knox and Lincoln Counties, and Director of the camp. A scavenger hunt for natural treasures added to the fun! After the tour, we all gathered in the dining hall to celebrate the accomplishments of Knox-Lincoln 4-H members for the past year. We even had a few non-member guests in attendance. Sabrinnah D. and her friend Mariah were the winners of the Bring-a-Friend drawing. Each received a $25 gift card to Michaels.
A presentation was given by Nathan D. about being a member of the 4-H Youth Council. Nathan was also awarded the Leadership and Team Player awards, as nominated by his club leader, Darlene Newcombe. As a combined honor and with his project in mind, KLLA awarded Nathan $100.00 gift certificate to RockAuto.com.
Members of the Aldermere Achievers 4-H Club gave us all an update on their club and projects. They did a great job of presenting their talk without the aid of slides, as we lost power that day! Good flexibility, Achievers!
We received thirteen Project Records this year. Each project submitted earned members a $20.00 gift card to Tractor Supply Co. Stores. The members with the top scoring record at each level earned an additional $25.00 gift card. Thank you to our judges, Valerie Jackson, Linda Bonin, Joelle Albury, and Vonnie Drown. Congratulations, everyone!

Outstanding Advanced Record
The Pearl Clover Award was awarded to Sam Newcombe in recognition of his 15 years of service as a 4-H volunteer. As a 4-H member, Sam served as a Junior Leader at the state, county and club levels, and has continued as an adult leader ever since.
Also being honored for 15 years of volunteer service to 4-H was Heidi Baker, leader of the Aldermere Achievers/MidCoast Ag Club. Heidi was also a 4-H member. She has been one of our most active club leaders, a community partner, and instrumental in many programs, including the 4-H Farm-to-Fair Exhibit. Heidi was presented with the Pearl Clover Award.
The Ruby Clover Award was awarded to Valerie Jackson to honor her 30 years of service to 4-H in Knox and Lincoln Counties. From judging project records to helping set up events, she is always there to help. Her dual role with 4-H and as Livestock Coordinator at Union Fair has made her invaluable to 4-H livestock programs and beyond. She has held several officer roles in KLLA, most recently as president.
Photography Contest Winners
25 photographs were entered into the 2021 KL 4-H Photography Contest. The entries with the top twelve scores (listed below) will have their turn as cover pic on the KL 4-H Facebook page in 2022! Those twelve photos will also be printed and hung in the 4-H Gallery in the lobby of the Knox-Lincoln Extension office! Thank you to our judges: Christina St. Pierre of Chris in Focus Photography, Tori Jackson, Extension Professor of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and owner of Tori Lee Jackson Photography, and Liz Stanley, Horticulture Community Education Assistant in Knox & Lincoln Counties. Re-enrollment Time
Re-enrollment paperwork has been mailed to club leaders, volunteers, and some members. Annual enrollment is required for all 4-H members and volunteers to remain a part of 4-H. While most club leaders will distribute enrollment packets to members, a few club members and all independent members and volunteers will receive their packets at their home address. Be sure to check them over for accuracy, particularly the email, phone and mailing address that we should use to communicate with you in the coming year. All forms are due at the Extension office by December 15.
Oxton Trust Applications Due January 30 for All of 2022
Through the generosity and foresight of Robert Oxton, the Oxton Trust Fund was established to support
4-H youth development programs and activities in Knox and Lincoln Counties. The funds are available annually. Clubs, volunteers and members should anticipate what funds they expect to request for the entire 2022 calendar year, and submit an application for funds to the Oxton Trust Committee by January 30, 2022.
If a club, volunteer or member discovers a need for funds at a later date in 2022, a special meeting of the committee can be called and an application considered at any time. Funds available for mid-year requests, however, will be more limited.
Grants may be awarded for 4-H youth development programs and projects falling into one of the following areas: leadership, youth development and special programs. Applications can be submitted by
4-H staff, volunteers or members enrolled in the Knox and Lincoln Counties 4-H program. The application form is available on this website, or can be requested by contacting the Knox-Lincoln Extension office.

National Youth Agri-Science, Healthy Living Summit Applications for 2022 Available Now!
There are currently 12 scholarships available through funding from the Maine 4-H Foundation to send youth to the Washington, D.C. area for the Agri-Science and Healthy Living National Youth Summits in early 2022. Attendees will learn more about their area of interest by attending career panels, interactive workshops, and visiting related agencies throughout D.C. The Summits were created to empower youth to be well-informed citizens, expand engineering and agriculture experience, and increase connections to living a healthy lifestyle, all while being actively engaged in their communities.
Healthy Living: February 10-13, 2022
Agri-Science: March 10-13, 2022
Eligibility: Youth ages 14-18. Enrolled in 4-H by December 31, 2021
Participant Cost: $150.00 (Maine 4-H Foundation will cover the remainder of registration and flight costs—approximately $1,000.00).
Application: This is a combined application for both the Agri-Science and Healthy Living Summits
If any youth would like to attend the National Youth Summits. , but do not receive the scholarship funding, they may self-fund and attend. Important Changes for 2022 Fryeburg Fair Market Steer Intent to Sell Forms
This year the deadline for the form is December 31, 2021 (postmarked), and the form MUST come with the bill of sale/statement of value of the cow, as well as the photos of the front and side view of the animal.
We have an ONLINE form! The updated online form, as well as the printable word/pdf versions, are on the Beef page. There is also a link to the updated regulations for both Steers and Lambs at Fryeburg. Youth enrolled in 4-H outside of Maine (New Hampshire) will need to complete the paper forms and submit them to their local county office.
Youth who submit the intent will need to complete the regular Animal Approval form and list “Fryeburg Sale” as the show class for the animal.
4-H Agriculture Leadership Opportunity for Teens
The Maine 4-H Agricultural Leadership Ambassador Program is accepting registrations for an eight-week agricultural education and leadership experience. This program is open to Maine youth ages 14-18. Youth involved in this program will have opportunities to pursue their interest in agriculture and explore career pathways. This includes mentoring in post-secondary opportunities, as well as sparking a passion to investigate and explore current issues around food systems, livestock, crop sciences, aquaculture, climate issues impacting food systems, social justice around food equity, and more. There is not a requirement to have previous 4-H membership, this program is open to all Maine youth with an interest.
These opportunities will begin with a creation of an online learning cohort and will also include in-person experiences across the state and on the UMaine Campus.

Climate: Maine 4-H STEM Toolkit of the Month
Each month we will be highlighting a different 4-H STEM Toolkit available from UMaine Cooperative Extension 4-H Program!
In this series of activities, youth will explore the impact of weather and climate on humans, animals and plants and begin to understand what causes wind, snowfall, storms, and other weather events. Youth will create construction paper snowstorms, indoor thunderstorms, learn how a tree stump can reveal the climate of a region and create an instrument to measure wind speed. By recreating these natural events, children experiment with the various factors that affect weather and climate—humidity, air pressure, temperature, and elevation. They will also learn how weather forecasters use tools like contour maps to predict snowfall and temperature and discuss how animals and plants adapt to changing weather conditions. These hands-on activities allow kids to predict what will happen, test theories, then share their results. By gaining an understanding of the basic forces affecting climate, some of the mysteries of storms and wind are revealed and youth can see the impact of human activity on climate and environment. They’ll be introduced to climate vocabulary, gain an understanding of the importance of species diversity, and learn how to be good environmental stewards. Learn more about the Climate Toolkit!

Maine 4-H Virtual Teen Science Cafés Canceled
Due to unforeseen circumstances, Maine 4-H Virtual Teen Science Cafés will not be held this fall. We plan to begin a new session of Science Cafés starting in the spring and will post session dates, topics, and registration details to our website as they are finalized.
