4.19.16 Mummy Berry Infection period in Midcoast Region

Waldo, Knox and Lincoln Counties

There was a possible infection period overnight from April 18 to April 19 reported at our weather stations located in Waldoboro, West Rockport, Appleton, and Searsport.

I have reports from growers of mummy berry cups in Appleton and Liberty. I suspect there are mummy berry cups throughout the midcoast area of Waldo, Lincoln, and Knox counties. Growers also report the plants have enough exposed tissue to being susceptible or very close to it.  Eyeball estimating is not very accurate in my personal experience.  You may be better at it than me!  You may also want to test to see how good you are at estimating by taking at least ten stems and counting all of the flower buds to see what stage they are at and calculating the percent at F2 stage.  I have been surprised at how far along they are in the past when you actually count them all.

Hancock and Washington Counties

I have a report of pinheads in North Ellsworth but nowhere else so far.  The plants are reported to not be very far along.

Please let me know how your plants and mummy berry plots are coming along. I can be reached at 207.581.2621 or on the blueberry hotline or via email sannis@maine.edu.
