Maine Sports Afield (ages 13 -15)
Hunt. Fish. Explore. Build your skills for the Maine outdoors.
For generations, Bryant Pond 4-H Camp has connected young people with Maine’s outdoors through hands-on programs in shooting sports, hunter education, fishing, conservation, and traditional outdoor skills.
Maine Sports Afield builds on that experience, giving teen campers the opportunity to explore a wider variety of hunting and fishing skills alongside knowledgeable instructors and outdoor professionals.
Through hands-on instruction in the field and on the water, campers explore techniques, equipment, and strategies used by hunters and anglers. Staff from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife also help provide instruction during select program activities, bringing additional knowledge and field experience to the week.
Skills for the Field and the Water
Throughout the week, campers explore a variety of hunting and fishing skills and techniques while gaining experience they can carry into their own outdoor adventures.
Hunting experiences include:
- Waterfowl hunting techniques
- Deer hunting strategies
- Turkey hunting techniques
- Calling and decoying
- Hunting equipment and its use
- Field skills and responsible outdoor practices
Fishing experiences include:
- Warm-water and cold-water fishing
- Lure selection
- Casting techniques
- Fishing equipment and tackle
- Strategies for different fish species and conditions
- Time on the water putting new skills into practice
The emphasis throughout the week is on learning by doing. Campers have opportunities to practice techniques, work with equipment, and learn from instructors who can share their own experience in the field and on the water.
And because this is summer camp, the experience goes beyond hunting and fishing. Campers also enjoy traditional Bryant Pond activities and time exploring the woods and waters surrounding camp.

Important Information About Personal Shooting Sports Equipment
Because The University of Maine defines firearms and archery equipment as weapons and has a strict weapons policy for the safety of all, and for liability and insurance reasons, camp program participants are asked not to bring their personal shooting sports equipment to Bryant Pond 4-H Camp & Learning Center without prior authorization from the Camp Director or the Maine 4-H Shooting Sports Program Coordinator. The 4-H Shooting Sports instruction team at Bryant Pond is very familiar with the wide variety of equipment here, and competently provides complete instruction in the shooting sports discipline programs that we offer.
