Black Bear Cubs is Bryant Pond’s introduction to wilderness survival skills, designed especially for younger campers. Through exploration, play, and hands-on discovery, campers begin learning what it means to be comfortable and confident in the outdoors.
The focus isn’t simply on learning survival skills—it’s on developing a sense of wonder about the natural world. Campers are encouraged to explore, ask questions, notice what’s around them, and discover just how much there is to learn in the woods.
Where Play Becomes Outdoor Skills
At Black Bear Cubs, games and exploration become opportunities to learn. Campers begin developing outdoor skills through activities that encourage curiosity, creativity, and learning by doing.
Throughout the week, experiences include:
- Building forts and simple shelters
- Learning the basics of fire-building
- Animal tracking and looking for signs of wildlife
- Nature awareness and observation
- Exploring the woods around Bryant Pond
- Introductory outdoor and survival skills
- Hands-on games and challenges
The goal isn’t to rush young campers toward advanced skills. It’s to give them a positive first experience in the outdoors and help build the curiosity and confidence that can grow with them.
A Full Summer Camp Experience
Black Bear Cubs also enjoy plenty of traditional Bryant Pond activities, including swimming, canoeing, hiking, and ropes course challenges. The combination of outdoor learning and classic camp fun creates a week filled with opportunities to explore, make friends, try new things, and simply enjoy being a kid outdoors.
Campers stay in our bunkhouse, giving younger campers the comforts of a traditional residential camp experience while spending their days exploring and learning outside.
The Beginning of the Wilderness Survival Path
For campers who discover a love of outdoor skills, Black Bear Cubs provides an introduction to the experiences they can continue building on as they grow.
As campers get older, Bryant Pond’s Wilderness Survival programs provide opportunities to take on new skills and greater challenges, eventually leading to our two-week Bushcraft experience for teens.
