Woodscraft Program Path

Discover the traditions of the Maine woods. Build skills. Create your own adventure.
Rooted in the traditions of the Maine Guide, Bryant Pond’s Woodscraft Program Path introduces young people to the knowledge, skills, and experiences that have long been part of living and traveling in the Maine woods.
From learning to build a campfire and prepare meals outdoors to navigating with a map and compass, traveling by canoe, and developing the confidence to take on new challenges, Woodscraft campers learn by doing. Along the way, they develop resourcefulness, independence, teamwork, and a deeper appreciation for Maine’s natural world.
Our programs combine traditional woods skills with modern outdoor safety and camping practices. Guided by experienced outdoor staff, campers are encouraged to challenge themselves, take on new responsibilities, and discover the satisfaction that comes from becoming more capable in the outdoors.
A Tradition of Learning and Adventure
Woodscraft is about more than mastering individual skills. It’s about learning to work together, making thoughtful decisions, and developing the confidence to explore the outdoors safely and responsibly.
Depending on the program, campers may gain experience in:
- Axemanship and responsible outdoor tool use
- Fire-building and wilderness cooking
- Map and compass navigation
- Canoeing and outdoor travel
- Hiking and camping skills
- First aid and outdoor preparedness
- Tree and wildlife identification
- Outdoor leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving
For campers interested in taking their outdoor skills even further, the Woodscraft pathway can lead toward the Junior Maine Guide program, an intensive four-week experience that prepares participants to pursue one of Maine’s most respected youth outdoor skills achievements.

Junior Maine Woodscraft | Ages 10–12
An introduction to the traditions of the Maine woods, Junior Maine Woodscraft gives younger campers the opportunity to learn practical outdoor skills while living in tents at one of Bryant Pond’s woodland campsites.
Through outdoor cooking, fire-building, canoeing, hiking, and shared campsite responsibilities, campers develop confidence, independence, and an appreciation for outdoor living.
At the end of the week, participants receive their Junior Maine Woodscraft patch in recognition of their accomplishments.
Maine Woodscraft | Ages 13–15
Two-Week Outdoor Skills & Leadership Experience
Maine Woodscraft takes outdoor learning further through more advanced instruction, increased responsibility, and opportunities to apply skills in the field.
Throughout the two weeks, campers develop their abilities in navigation, outdoor cooking, axemanship, canoeing, campsite management, and outdoor preparedness. A weekend camping trip connects the two weeks, giving participants an opportunity to put their knowledge into practice. Additional adventures may include hiking or paddling.
Campers conclude the program by demonstrating their skills and earning their Maine Woodscraft patch.
Junior Maine Guide | Ages 15–18
Four-Week Outdoor Skills & Leadership Experience
Junior Maine Guide is the most advanced experience in Bryant Pond’s Woodscraft pathway, offering an intensive four-week opportunity for teens ready to deepen their outdoor knowledge, skills, and leadership abilities.
Through hands-on instruction, outdoor challenges, and practical experience, participants work toward the skills and standards associated with Maine’s Junior Maine Guide program.
For young people interested in pursuing the Junior Maine Guide recognition, this program represents an opportunity to challenge themselves, demonstrate their abilities, and continue a tradition of outdoor knowledge and stewardship.
Your Adventure, Your Path
While these programs offer opportunities for campers to build on their experiences as they grow, there is no requirement to complete each program in sequence.
Some campers begin with Junior Maine Woodscraft and continue through Maine Woodscraft before taking on Junior Maine Guide. Others discover their interest in outdoor skills later and enter a program that matches their age and readiness.
Whether a camper chooses one Woodscraft experience or continues developing their skills over several summers, each program offers its own opportunities for adventure, friendship, and personal growth.
