— By Kate Yerxa, MS, RD, University of Maine Cooperative Extension
February is a month known for sweet treats, flowers, and hearts, so what better time to talk about heart healthy snacks. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute has developed resources to help you celebrate American Heart Month.
Heart healthy foods can help you prevent heart disease and are part of MyPlate recommendations. Foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, plant-based proteins like cooked dry beans, peas, and lentils, nuts, seeds, and non-fat and low-fat dairy foods. Using these foods, we have put together a list of 10 low-cost and tasty heart healthy snacks for you to try and celebrate a healthy heart every month.
